BuffaloResearch.com is the ultimate resource for digging into Buffalo's rich history. This collection of archives, links, articles, and more is the largest, best organized collection of online resources for researching Buffalo ancestors, buildings & companies.
This site was founded by Richard Prem in December 1993 as what was then called a Special Interest Group (SIG) on Buffalo Freenet. It was called Roots and it predated the introduction of HTML and graphical browsers, making it possibly the oldest genealogy website in all of cyberspace. Buffalo Freenet, a project created and hosted by the University at Buffalo, was dissolved around 2008.
Prem handed the reins to Cynthia Van Ness in late 1995, and she has been tinkering with it ever since. In January 2005, she renamed the site BuffaloRoots and moved everything to her domain, BuffaloResearch.com. In 2007, she eliminated the page called BuffaloRoots and redesigned the home page to show the full contents of the site, genealogical and otherwise. Laughable evidence of her primitive HTML skills can be seen at the Wayback Machine,
In Fall 2014, BuffaloResearch.com won the Buffalo's Worst Website contest sponsored by Luminous Media LLC, who then threw themselves into redesigning not just the user interface but reprogramming the entire back end.
